SPRING 2010
Another great start to the year and despite some initial weather issues, the performance of the Academy has been very strong overall, in both golf and education:
JGA Golf Update
The Easter break seen the JGA students head off and compete in various tournaments throughout the country.
· The Leinster youths at Laytown and Bettystown GC saw the first of these. The weather was cold and miserable which lead to higher scores than normal with the first round being cancelled. Five players from the Academy performed notably, David Graham, Eoin Dolan, Adam Brown, Tiarnan McLarnon and Connor Glynn all making the final qualifying round. Both Glynn and McLarnon had noticeable first rounds which seen them well up the field but the weather caught up with them over the three days.
· The following week seen the Munster youths at Tramore GC seen kinder weather and improved scoring. Once again the Academy golfers performed consistently with David Shaw, Colin Finnerty, Tiarnan McLarnon, Jason Thompson and Connor Glynn all making the last days play. Glynn again proved to be the outstanding performer producing a brilliant 3 under par 70 in the last round to finish in fourth position.
· Sarah Helly travelled to Ballybunion GC in Kerry to compete in the Munster Ladies Championship, her score being good enough to win the Munster Girls Championship being the best under 18 in the field, congratulations to Sarah, 1st year Academy student.
· An Academy team played a match against a mixed team made up of 3 students from each of Blackwater Integrated College and Downs High School which included Ulster Panel representatives, at the SPA Golf Club on Friday 16th April. Wins for Ashley Clements, Niall McGivern, Oliver McNeilly, and David Shaw ensured a 4-2 point victory.
· An Academy team managed to beat Whitehead 5.5 to 4.5 points on Sunday 11th April. The Whitehead Fred Daly team were strengthened by some older experienced golfers, making the game very challenging, and as it turned out it was a very tight match with the outcome not decided until the last putt of the day. Upcoming matches: Schools Championship, Killarney, Ballymena Fred Daly
If you are interested in joining our full time golf/education programme, we would welcome you to join us at the Academy for a day or two and enjoy a ‘piece’ of student life! Please contact our office and we can arrange for you to visit (accommodation can be arranged).
Rory visits JGA
A day that will live long in the memory of all the students came on Thursday 15th April when Rory McIlroy one of the world’s top golfers paid a visit to the academy. Rory generously gave up a morning of his time to spend it hanging out with students. Rory started the day with an informal chat about life on tour and the level of commitment required being a top player, this was an invaluable insight to all the students outlining the work and commitment required to make it to the top.Rory then proceeded to give a long and short game clinic talking about all the different shots and how he manages to hit them and then hitting just about every shot under the sun on request. Rory spent the final part of his visit hanging out with the students answering general questions. I can imagine one of our students being asked “what did you get up to today at the academy” the answer may go “ahh just spent the morning hanging out with Rory McIlroy hitting some balls and checking out his new wheels.” Cool or what!
